DJ Floskel Australian Tour 2009

in

What do you call a guy who's rocked clubs from Croatia to the Netherlands to Kings Cross, Sydney? Who's brought the funk to bboy battles from Austria to Switzerland to... Kings Cross, Sydney? And who's bounced house parties from Egypt to New York to.... Chatswood?!

He calls himself DJ Floskel, and we call him one of Europe's top funk and hip hop DJs. Read on to find out why, and take away a free slice of Floskel's special Oz Tour 2009 Soundtrack mix...

Step into the battle

in

Just out - full footage from the first Battle at The Scenario, 4th September 2009. Bigups to Rob Bones for all the editing work and Antinutt for all the assistance with the b!tch-ass exporting. Of course bigups to all the dancers who came and supported, to DJ Naiki and to "Sick Guys" Tass and Rush, who took out the title.

Next battle is Friday 4th December. Bigger prize, bigger hype. Strap your shoes on!...

Maths - counting a quarter-century in hip hop

in

Rumours abound about the figure known across Australia and internationally as "Deejay Mathmatics": that he's in fact a cyborg sent to infiltrate Australian hip hop and take its illness back to an alien home planet in some far corner of the universe; or alternatively that he's sent on top secret diplomatic missions to global trouble spots like Afghanistan to negotiate UN-backed peace treaties - usually during the week between weekend club shows...

Whatever the veracity of said claims, one thing I have witnessed and so can confirm myself is that this dude is liable to tear up a club turntable booth with cuts, juggles and a mash-up set that would put 99.9% of DJs to shame, before emerging from behind the decks to freestyle a dope 16 bar verse, then top-rocking and dropping into a tight bboy freeze before moonwalking out the door with a bag of spray cans to paint an ill mural on the wall outside (lads note: on a wall, not in the fkn bathrooms...).

How long has this guy been contributing to the hip hop culture we all enjoy these days? Well, he's been a pillar of the Australian scene since 1984 - you do the maths...

Dilated NU - get dancekooled

in

In July, hatonrack was lucky enough to feature the talent of elite hip hop dance crew Dilated NU at The Scenario launch party. Approaching their performance as part of the full 10-man NU crew at The Scenario on 2nd October, JPlatnum sat down with Nao from the crew to learn a bit more about these icons of Australian dance…

Five Earpieces 23rd July - Be Selektive

in

I can think of a few "producer albums" (y'know, published under name of the producer, guest MCs on every track) in the past couple of years that have really, really pushed hip hop music forward - Marco Polo's Port Authority, Exile's Dirty Science just to name a couple...

Well late 2008 saw an addition to that distinguished list; an addition that from my perspective took the crown. Production at a new level, and a guest list that's just a few passed away-MCs short of a complete hip hop hall of fame. "Tell me the name" you say? Alright read on for it, but be sure to spell it right - do that and this guy'll order your shopping online and make your axolotl grow a new set of gills...

Five Earpieces 23rd July - still business

in

With selection three of five earpieces for 23rd July, I begin by noting that certain names are inseparably bonded with specific areas of human endeavour. Kissenger for diplomacy. Lennon and Jackson for their respective areas of pop music. "Hitler" and "Burmese military junta" in the occupation of being unparalleled c#nts...

The names "Eric" and "Parish" represent that for hip hop, and the latest project by the super-duo shows that, more than two decades and seven albums down, they're still writing the game's rule books.

Bang this album in the Nimbus and your kids'll think you're cool again for a day.

Five Earpieces 23rd July - enters the H.O.V.A

in

Selection four of five items on the audio menu for 23rd July 2009 was rated album #248 of all time by Rolling Stone. Read a few paragraphs on it by yours truly - it'll stretch out those hamstrings and make your wife want to sleep with you again.

Five Earpieces 23rd July - Pseudo Slang

in

Anxious about how to compose the soundtrack to life this week? It's OK, stress less - JPlatnum breaks down five sure-shot hot projects that will improve your life and whiten your teeth.

...Ohyo but I got feedback that this post was in fact way too long for all you fickle net surfers out there. So I broke it down into five easily-digestable courses. So let's start at the end - recommendation number five, Pseudo Slang...

The Scenario - Lift-off

in

The Scenario launch party was a success. No I'm not writing a blog entry selling the hatonrack realm as a jelly-bean land where only magic and good things happen. Let's face it, just look at MC Eno - it's been almost seven years and 206collab still can't get rid of the bastard.

But the launch of the Scenario funk and hip hop party on Friday 3rd July was a success.
