DJ Floskel Australian Tour 2009

Since 2003 the hatonrack crew has experienced three Floskel Australian tours. We know the what goes down when the funky Kraut's in town. And that's plain and simple hellraising stupidity, tomfoolery and unrelenting turntable wizardry - nay, unbridled turntable warlockery. Ken and Ryu funkin thunderclapping streetfightery. Cow-riding-a-horse barnyard animalfamiliarity...

But who is this cat DJ Floskel?

Floskel is one of Germany's - and Europe's - top funk and hip hop DJs. Having spun his first hip hop wax at home in 1997 (much like a JPlatnum, but on the shitty side of the Earth), Floskel has spent over 12 years expanding his knowledge and collection of international hip hop, funk, soul, rock and reggae pressed from the 1960s to present day. The man describes his mission as to "travel the world spinning analog sounds with a 70s flavor for those who love to get down to, while trying to uplift the original art of HipHop DJing, as was originated by the pioneers in NY back in the 1970s."

Yeah that's right, you guessed it - Floskel is one of those rare, zealous and true hip hop nerds with a real understanding of the history and what it's about. Experiencing one of his sets, you can expect to hear not just a full range of integral bboy and hip hop culture classics, but also a few hidden gems you're bound not to have heard before unless you were at the same small Georgian town flea market he was digging at in 2002 and you stole a listen of that unique break on that weird local record hidden under a crate of squirrels before it disappeared under Floskel's cloak and he flew off into the night...

Of course when you experience a Floskel set (and you can do that by downloading the DJ Floskel Oz Tour 2009 Soundtrack preview mix), you'll also hear some incredibly creative, dizzyingly fast and clostraphobically tight turntablism.

It's no joke what they say about German precision - invite one of these guys round for dinner and they'll be sharpening your kitchen knives and checking your dishwasher's working properly before they eat off your plates. And when it comes to German precision, Floskel is a seriously A-grade example.

Listening through DJ Floskel's many mixtapes (I've got a collection dating back to 2001, which is when he pressed his first tape with his fellas from Super Duty Tuff Works), you can hear a kid interested in the scratch become a full-blown cut-and-juggle ninja black belt. All those clicks, flares, tears, aquaplanes and stuff that sad, sickly white hip hop nerd with no friends who lives down the street can do? Floskel does it at least twelve times better. And Floskel has friends.

Don't believe Floskel has friends (damn, son has feelings too y'know?!) or that his skills are all that? Download hatonrack's exclusive DJ Floskel Oz Tour 2009 Soundtrack preview mix - you'll see...

But it's not all about straight scratch-nerding in a bedroom. One of the things that sets this guy apart from other DJs is that he knows how to rock two tables and a mixer not just for a standard club crowd of people getting loose and dancing, but also for the bboys. And the key to that is really listening to the funk, catching the break and then creatively looping it using just the two technics - back-and-forth with creative variations and on-time enough that you aren't gonna screw up the flow for the dancers. Yeah Floskel's one of the best in Europe; here's just a taste of some of the battles he's soundtracked for:

  • Austria: BOTY South East Europe 2005, Original BBoy Jam Pt. 3, IBE 7 to Smoke Qualification 2009
  • Croatia: WestCoast Istra Battle 2006, FlorKilah Tribute 2006
  • Germany: Splash Festival 2009, Battle of the East 2006 + 2009, Evolution Europe 2009, Ants In Your Pants 2007 + 2008 + 2009, Ghetto Soul 2009, Octogon Germany 2007 + 2008, Stay Fresh Jam 2009, Trust in Wax, Circle Princz Germany 2008 + 2009, Funk Fiasko (...and on and on...)
  • Netherlands: BOTY Benelux 2006, Blockjam 2007
  • Switzerland: Summer Jam 2006 + 2007 + 2008, Transilvania Live Battle, No Half Steppin 10th Anniversary

That must be why Lamaroc (Fresh Sox/7$/Zulu Kingz) gets so excited about "Floskel in your ears and in your brain with that killa rocking fownk!"

In conclusion, the plague came out of Europe, and so did Floskel. They're both deadly. One's a disease you don't want to catch; the other you DEF want to catch at The Scenario, Melt Kings Cross on 6th November and 4th December 2009.

Which is which? You choose.

Am I corny? Yes, yes I am...
